Best cement for foundation
For isolated footings and a normal Chennai raft, specify OPC 53 in the structural concrete unless the engineer writes a PPC or PSC mix. Early strength keeps the formwork cycle honest on clay and filled plots. For mass rafts and constant-groundwater sites (Pallikaranai, parts of Medavakkam, coastal OMR), the engineer may switch the foundation concrete to PPC or PSC for lower heat and better sulphate / chloride resistance.
Do not let the contractor pour the footing with leftover plaster PPC “because it is cheaper this week”. Foundation concrete follows the mix design, not the leftover bag.
Best cement for RCC slab and columns
For beams, columns and the roof slab on a typical G or G+1 Chennai house, OPC 53 is the default we write. It reaches stripping strength on a predictable calendar. OPC 43 is acceptable where the mix design and the engineer say so. PPC can be used in RCC if the engineer designs for the slower early-strength curve — do not swap it on site to save a few rupees per bag.
On the coast, keep the frame on OPC 53 unless the structural drawing names a corrosion-resistant or PSC mix. Cover, compaction and curing matter more than the logo on the bag.
Best cement for brickwork
PPC is the brickwork cement on our Chennai houses. It works the mortar longer in heat, and the fly-ash blend is the right chemistry for masonry that will sit in humidity for decades. PSC is a sound coastal alternative for compound walls and wet masonry when the engineer agrees.
Brands we regularly see on Chennai sites — including UltraTech, Dalmia, Coromandel, Priya and Zuari — are acceptable when the bag is IS-marked, the week-code is current, and the mill test certificate matches the lot. Best cement for plastering
PPC is the plastering cement. It shrinks less than a hot OPC plaster and is the bag we want on internal and external plaster in Chennai’s salt air. Do not plaster with OPC 53 “to finish faster” — that is how you buy hairline cracks before the first monsoon.
For bathroom and tank plaster, PPC or PSC plus the waterproofing spec on the drawing. The bag does not replace a membrane.
