What Is the Difference Between OPC and PPC Cement?

OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement) is limestone clinker ground with 5% gypsum, manufactured under IS 269:2015. It comes in three grades — OPC 33, 43, and 53 — where the number is the minimum 28-day compressive strength in MPa. OPC 43 is India's standard residential structural cement; OPC 53 is used where higher-grade concrete (M30+) is specified.

PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement) is OPC clinker blended with 15–35% fly ash under IS 1489 (Part 1):2023. The fly ash reacts with the lime released during hydration, filling microscopic pores and producing a denser, less permeable concrete. Neither cement waterproofs a structure by itself. No amount of PPC replaces a proper waterproofing system on the roof slab and sump — cement choice reduces long-term permeability, it doesn't eliminate the need for it.

What Do IS 269 and IS 1489 Actually Require?

IS 269:2015 is the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for Ordinary Portland Cement. It defines three grades — OPC 33, 43, and 53 — based on minimum 28-day compressive strength, and sets the composition at roughly 95% clinker to 5% gypsum.

IS 1489 (Part 1):2023 is the BIS specification for fly-ash-based Portland Pozzolana Cement.
