These are dealer and mill reference ranges for Chennai, compiled 15 Oct 2026. They are not a quote. GST treatment is not the same on every list — ARS states GST is included; the Building Needs Fe550D list is plus 18% GST. Freight is extra on both. Confirm the basis on the day you buy.

TMT rod weight × price (standard 12 m rod)

Weight = d²/162 × 12. Use this to check a dealer’s per-piece quote against the per-kg rate. Figures below are the low, middle and high of the October primary-brand band (₹62 / ₹67 / ₹72 per kg). They are a check, not an ARS invoice — ARS 12mm is ₹78.50/kg with GST already in.

Steel price trend – October 2026

Tata nexarc’s October 2026 Chennai note puts primary TMT at ₹62,000–72,000 per tonne and secondary TMT at ₹52,000–62,000 per tonne. Branded rates are described as steady, and secondary stock as a touch softer. The same page’s live Fe550D quote checks that week ran from ₹53,600 to ₹68,843 per tonne, depending on brand and diameter.

A dated Chennai dealer list on 14 Oct 2026 (Building Needs) has Fe550D from ₹58/kg (PFI) to ₹66.10/kg (ARS), before 18% GST. That is the local yard print for regional Fe550D, not the primary-brand band.

1 kg steel price in India today vs Chennai

There is no single all-India trade print on this page for October. The number a Chennai homeowner pays is the local band: ₹62–72/kg for Tata Tiscon, JSW Neosteel and SAIL, and ₹52–62/kg for regional mills (Tata nexarc, October 2026).

Ask whether GST 18% is already inside the quote, and which diameter they mean. ARS’s own Tamil Nadu list is GST-inclusive. The Building Needs Fe550D list is not. A national “per kg” headline that does not say ex-GST or inclusive is not comparable to either.

ARS steel price today

ARS publishes its own Tamil Nadu reference, updated 12 Oct 2026. Fe550D 12mm is ₹78.50 per kg (₹78,500 per tonne), GST included. Freight, loading and unloading are extra. The same list is ₹80/kg for 8mm and 32mm, and ₹78.50/kg for 10mm, 16mm, 20mm and 25mm. CRS Fe550D 12mm on that page is ₹79.50/kg, also GST included — ₹1/kg over plain Fe550D.

The same week, Building Needs (Chennai, 14 Oct 2026) lists ARS Fe550D at ₹66.10/kg plus 18% GST. 18% on ₹66.10 is about ₹78/kg, close to the mill’s ₹78.50 inclusive figure, not the same number. Use the written quote, not the gap between the two pages.

If a contractor quotes “ARS”, demand the mill Material Test Certificate, the BIS licence in the ribs, and whether GST is inside the rate. Do not accept a verbal “same as Kamachi” comparison. Kamachi Fe500D is about ₹54–55/kg on October Chennai listings (Tata nexarc) — a different mill and a different ticket.

Structural steel price per kg in Chennai

Structural steel (angles, channels, I-beams, MS plates) is not the same product as TMT rebar. The ₹52–72/kg TMT band on this page does not apply to rolled sections. We do not have a verified October 2026 Chennai per-kg rate for structural sections, so we are not inventing one.

For a house, almost all of the steel cost is TMT in the RCC frame — columns, beams, slabs and footings. Structural sections show up in a gate, staircase stringer or a small steel roof, not in the main kg estimate. If your drawing specifies rolled sections, get a separate dealer quote by section size and ask whether GST 18% is included.

Fe500 vs Fe550D near the coast

Inland Chennai houses (G to G+2) should specify Fe500D or Fe550D TMT to IS:1786 — the D is the ductility the soil needs. Within 2–3 km of the sea (OMR, ECR, Adyar, Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur), specify corrosion-resistant (CRS) Fe500D or Fe550D, not plain Fe500. Tata nexarc’s October Chennai note puts a coastal CRS premium at about 8–12% over standard Fe500D. ARS’s own 12 Oct 2026 Tamil Nadu list is narrower for that mill: CRS Fe550D 12mm is ₹79.50/kg against ₹78.50/kg for Fe550D, both GST included.

How much steel for a 1000 / 1500 / 2000 sq.ft house?

A working thumb rule is about 4 kg of TMT per sq.ft of built-up area. Confirm the exact kg from a Bar Bending Schedule before you buy. Cost range below uses the October primary-brand band of ₹62–72/kg. Regional mills at ₹52–62/kg, and ARS at ₹78.50/kg GST included, sit outside this table.
