What Is House Elevation Design, and Why Does Plot Direction Change It?
An elevation is the flat, straight-on drawing of one external face of a building. In Indian residential practice, "elevation" almost always means the front face — the side that meets the road. It sets the entrance, the window rhythm, the projection depths and the material palette. That drawing is part of the same package as floor plans and 3D views from our architects in Chennai.
Direction changes that drawing for three concrete reasons, and only one of them is about tradition.
The three things that actually shift
- The entrance moves. Vastu shastra assigns favourable and unfavourable door zones to each wall, so the door rarely sits dead centre once the rules are applied.
- The sun load moves. A wall facing the 5pm sun behaves nothing like a wall facing the 8am sun, even though both are "sunny" on paper.
- The staircase and services move. Vastu pushes staircases and utility blocks toward the south and west, which pulls the visible massing of the front face with them.
Here's the thing most galleries won't tell you. The pretty part of an elevation — the cladding, the texture, the lighting — is the last 10% of the decision. The first 90% is fixed by where the door, the stair and the shading have to go, which is why we draw the elevation with the plan rather than pasting a look on at the end. Does elevation style change with direction too?
Style and direction are separate decisions. A modern elevation, a contemporary flat-roof front, a traditional Chettinad-influenced facade and a minimalist single-floor elevation can all be built on any of the four facings. What changes is the depth of the projections and the amount of glass inside that style.
A modern double-floor elevation with a full-height glass box works on an east or north front. The same 3D elevation design on a west plot needs the glass pulled back behind a jali screen or a fin wall — and it will still read as modern. Plot size works the same way: a 30x40 front has less width to compose with than a 40x60, but the shading depths for its facing do not shrink to match.
Which Elevation Design Works Best for an East-Facing House?
An east-facing plot gives you the most design freedom of the four. Morning sun arrives at a low angle but carries far less accumulated heat than afternoon sun, because the ground and air have cooled overnight. That means you can open up the front face without paying for it in cooling load.
In vastu terms the east belongs to Surya, and the main door is placed in the northern half of the east wall. The south-east corner of that wall is the zone traditionally avoided.
What this looks like in a drawing
A chajja is a projecting concrete ledge cast above a window or door to throw shade onto the opening below. On an east front, 450–600 mm of chajja handles the morning sun angle in most Chennai layouts.
- Large front glazing is safe. Floor-to-ceiling windows or a double-height living room feature wall works here without a heat penalty.
- Shallow projections are enough. A 450–600 mm chajja over openings is sufficient; you do not need the deep bands a west front demands.
- The portico sits north of centre. This follows the door position rather than fighting it, and it keeps the car out of the pooja and kitchen zones.
- Detail belongs on the front. Jali work, stone cladding and feature lighting all read best here, because morning light rakes across texture instead of flattening it.
One practical Chennai note. Streets in older grid layouts like Kolathur, Perambur and parts of Ashok Nagar run largely east–west, which produces long rows of east and west-facing plots side by side. What Should a West-Facing House Elevation Do Differently?
A west front is the one that punishes a copied design. Between roughly 3pm and 6pm the sun sits low in the western sky, so it does not strike the wall from above — it strikes it almost horizontally, straight past any normal overhang and directly into the room. That timing is the problem. The wall is already heat-soaked from the day, and it is releasing that heat into your living room exactly when the family comes home. This matters because it is a permanent running cost, not a one-time build cost.
The west-front toolkit
- Deepen every horizontal projection. Aim for roughly 900 mm or more over west-facing openings instead of a decorative 300 mm band.
- Add vertical elements, not just horizontal ones. A jali is a perforated screen — clay, terracotta, concrete or metal — that blocks direct sun while letting air pass through. Fins and jali screens stop the low-angle light that an overhang cannot reach.
- Move the glass, don't just tint it. Shifting a window to the north face of the same room is cheaper and more effective than any glass upgrade.
- Put the buffer rooms on the west. Staircase, toilets, stores and utility take the heat so your bedrooms don't — which is also what vastu prescribes.
- Choose light, reflective finishes. A pale render or light stone on the west wall runs measurably cooler than dark cladding in the same position.


Vastu places the west under Varuna and permits a main entrance here, though it narrows the acceptable door zone compared with the east. So a west-facing plot is not a vastu failure. It is simply a plot where the elevation has to work harder.
How Do You Design a North-Facing House Elevation?
A north-facing house elevation can carry the largest glazing of any facing, because north light stays diffused and shadow-free through most of the year. Place the main door in the eastern half of the north wall, and run a moderate 600 mm overhang across the top of the openings. That overhang is not decoration — it earns its keep during the weeks when the midday sun passes north of Chennai.
North is the quiet favourite among architects, and for a reason that has nothing to do with vastu. North light is steady and shadow-free, which is why studios and galleries are lit from the north wherever possible.
Vastu associates the north with Kubera, keeper of wealth, and treats it as an auspicious facing. The main door sits in the eastern half of the north wall, with the north-east zone considered the most favourable of all.
The Chennai detail nobody mentions
Chennai sits at roughly 13° north latitude, well inside the tropics. For about sixteen weeks between late April and mid-August, the midday sun passes north of the city rather than south of it. Your north wall is not permanently shaded here the way it would be in Delhi or Chandigarh.
The practical consequence is small but real. A north front can still take generous glazing, but a modest overhang across the top of those openings earns its keep through the peak summer weeks.

Is a South-Facing House Elevation Actually Bad?
No — and this is the single most expensive misunderstanding in Indian residential property. Vastu does not condemn a south-facing plot. It restricts specific entrance positions on the south wall, particularly the south-west corner, while permitting others.
From a building-science angle the south front is genuinely easy to handle. Because the southern sun sits high in the sky at midday, a horizontal projection of roughly 600–750 mm over an opening does most of the work. That is the cheapest shading device there is.
Where south-facing actually costs you
- Resale perception, not performance. Many Chennai buyers filter by facing, so a south plot can sit longer on the market regardless of build quality.
- A tighter entrance zone. The favourable door band on a south wall is narrower, which constrains the front composition earlier in the design.
- The south-west corner needs care. Both vastu and thermal logic push heavy, closed, low-use spaces here rather than a master bedroom window.
What we always recommend: if a south-facing plot is priced meaningfully below an equivalent east-facing one in the same locality, the discount is often larger than the design cost of solving it. That is a real opportunity, provided you go in with your eyes open about eventual resale.
How Do Floor Plans and Vastu Sit Behind the Elevation?
The elevation is the consequence of the plan, never the other way round. Once you fix where the kitchen, the pooja room and the staircase sit, the front face has already decided most of itself. Vastu organises a plot into directional zones and assigns a function to each. The Brahmasthan is the central zone of a plot, which vastu treats as the energetic core of the house and asks you to leave unbuilt where possible. Homeowners are frequently surprised by this split, so it is worth stating plainly before you sign anything:

What Does Elevation Design and Finishing Cost in Chennai?
Elevation cost splits into two very different line items, and conflating them is how homeowners get blindsided. Design drawings in Chennai typically run ₹15–30 per sq ft, charged as a lump sum or per square foot of built area. The material decision is where the money is
This is the ladder we walk clients up, from most affordable to most premium:
- Texture paint over plaster. The baseline. Gives you colour, banding and a bit of relief with no additional substructure.
- Cement or GRC (glass-reinforced concrete) mouldings and bands. Adds depth and shadow lines cheaply, and doubles as functional shading if you size the projections properly.
- Terracotta or clay jali screens. The most cost-effective solution for a west front, because it solves heat and looks good in the same move.
- Stone cladding. Granite, sandstone or slate on the feature portion only. Rarely worth wrapping the whole facade.
- ACP (aluminium composite panel), HPL (high-pressure laminate) or louvre systems. The premium end. Needs a designed substructure, which is a separate cost line.
